Summers in Texas can be brutal, and there have been times when I've had to work in the attic to repair HVAC systems or run wiring and felt like I was going to pass out from the heat. The point of insulation (in walls or on top of the ceiling) is to reduce the transfer of heat from the outside to the inside of your home. Unfortunately, the attic stairs area only has a thin layer of wood to slow down the heat exchange, and it doesn't do a very good job of it. Despite the fact that I am unable to confirm the R-, I can confirm that the amount of heat I feel on the attic stairs door has significantly decreased as a result of the insulation cover's value. I could feel the heat before I put the cover on, but now the attic door feels as cold as the ceiling (conditioned air). The zipper is the most important feature to look for in these types of covers; some will use a cheap zipper that gets stuck or the teeth break; I've gone into the attic a dozen times since installing the cover and have had no zipper issues; the cover is also fairly stiff and stays up; I've seen some covers that are very thin and don't retain a box shape. Installation is simple but time-consuming; you can use a staple gun or a battery-powered brad nailer (Ryobi AirStrike, for example), but I recommend using a battery-powered brad nailer (Ryobi AirStrike) because it makes the job go much faster and secures the cover.

The product is fantastic, and it was simple to set up. br>br>The only real work I did was discover that my house's builder had installed the ladder and frame to my attic with long nails and no shims, so I cut some wood blocks and added more long wood screws to further secure the frame to the rafters. I then used some 1x6 boards to make the opening the correct size for the insulation cover, ensuring that it fit properly and securely. Installation was a breeze after that. br>br> I used a staple gun and stapled every 2 - 3 inches. The bottom of the cover is 3 inches wide. br>br>How can I tell if it's effective? My garage's temperature rose a couple of degrees. Even when the garage door was closed, heat was apparently venting up and through the drafty attic door. However, the temperature swings have leveled off, implying that the garage will stay warmer and lose less heat during the winter months. When I lower the ladder and stick my head and body into the cover before unzipping it, I notice a difference. It certainly feels cooler, and when I used an IR Thermometer to compare the temperatures before and after the cover was installed, it measured as being cooler. br>br>I was so impressed with this product that I recommended it to a few friends who were in similar situations and needed a way to insulate their attic pull-down vents. descending the stairs.

Our attic has pull-down stairs, and our air return is directly beneath them. When the air conditioner turned on, it sucked in hot attic air from the stairwell. It wasn't until we had blown-in insulation installed in our attic that I realized what was going on. When we did this, we noticed a strange odor coming from the insulation whenever the air was turned on. This product was chosen because it was thicker and heavier than others of its kind. They included a photo of the cover in place as well as some simple instructions when it arrived. You'll need a heavy-duty stapler and 1/2-inch staples, similar to those used for upholstery. Because I couldn't find any staples, I used about 20 pieces of duct tape to secure the cover. It took about 15 minutes to complete, but that was only because it was so hot. When I finally got some staples for my stapler, it only took me about 5 minutes to secure it with about 100 staples. The installation was simple, and you didn't even have to go into the attic; you just stood on the ladder the entire time. The air conditioner now seems to come on less frequently, and there's no more odor from the attic. Hopefully, this will result in lower electric bills.

In my master bedroom walk-in closet, I have attic fold-down stairs. When we bought the house, the only insulation they had was a 2" R-value hard cover over the stairs. Six pieces of foam were pulled down over the opening and tightened. This closet, for some reason, does not have a vent, so there is no air conditioning or heat, and the room is always cold in the winter and hot in the summer; even installing a louvered door didn't help. I bought it out of curiosity, not expecting it to make much of a difference. It was stapled down every few inches, but there was no tape on it yet. The difference is striking; the closet is now nearly the same temperature as the rest of the home. I haven't measured them with a thermometer, but they feel pretty close. br>br>My main concern is for the attic to last a long time, especially if you use it frequently. It's flimsy and boxed in, so you have to step over it, or crawl over it in my attic, and I can see crawling over it causing wear and tear. In addition, the zipper is extremely flimsy. But, in all honesty, if I have to buy one of these every 4 or 5 years, I'm fine with that; I'm sure the utility savings will be much higher. If I have free time, I may consider erecting a hard "wall" around it to better protect it.

Although I went back over the gap where the edge of the insulation meets the frame of the stairs with some aluminum duct tape to get a better deal, it was fairly simple to install. I'm not sure how much it helps with energy bills, but I can tell when I unzip it vs. I can sense the difference as I descend the stairwell. This was recommended by two different insulation/energy companies, even though they don't sell it or install it, so I'm hoping it will help me keep my living space's heat down.

I haven't had it professionally evaluated, but it's clear that it will provide more benefits than not having it at all. During installation, I did notice the importance of staple spacing. It will be easier to make adjustments along the way if you use a minimal amount of staples until you've gone all the way around if you use a minimal amount of staples until you've gone all the way around. Simply add staples as needed once you've finished stapling all the way around. Overall, this is a fantastic product that is simple to set up. A big thumbs up!.
