We decided to wait until we were really cold before using the hand warmers. We reasoned that if we waited until then, they'd be or feel more effective. We had gloves on, but they weren't particularly thick. We opened the package when we were ready to use it- They're activated by the presence of air. As a result, wait until you're ready to use it. We gave them a quick shake in accordance with the directions. We kept them in our pockets and took them out whenever we needed them. They did their job and lasted for hours and hours, though the comfort of that warmth will most likely be determined by the temperature. With temperatures ranging from 37 to 42 degrees, the weather was cloudy and windy.
