Dear Paul, thank you for your interest in our board. The board might be a little slippery when new, so we suggest using a bit of wax for that purpose. It is not necessary to use a traction pad when the shoe is new, but you can if you choose to.

It is too expensive and doesn't work as well as it should. We received this as a Christmas gift and waited 6 months to use it. Very disappointed in the outcome.
