Questions & Answers

Is it possible to use this for my bike's brake line cable?

The inner wires of the shifting cable are horizontal, while the inner wires of the brake cable are round. They can't be swapped out for one another. This is solely for the purpose of cable shifting. If you're going to use it on multiple bikes, you might want to go with 5 mm. This allows you to use 5 mm brake and shifting cables, as well as the same end caps. Otherwise, your shifting will be 4 mm, your brake will be 5 mm, and different size caps will be required. If your cables aren't cut or torn, they can almost always be reused on your bike. I hope this has been of assistance.

I have a collection of antiques. Will this housing work for index shifting as well as school friction shifting on a single bike?

Yes. Because the compression of the brake housing is less important with friction shifters, you could also use brake housing.

Is there a set of ferrules included?

I was disappointed to discover that it no longer comes with any hardware. However, I can confirm that the cable is lined and appears to be in good condition.

Why wouldn't this work as a brake cable housing or the other way around?

The cables for shifting and braking are not the same. Shifting refers to a horizontal wire that runs through the cable and allows it to move very smoothly. Brake cable is made of a tougher, more durable circular wire. It would be difficult to shift if the shifting cable was inserted into the brake wire. You can watch a video on brake vs. clutch on YouTube. Consider the case of a shifting cable.

Shifter Cable is $1/ft
5/5

I had no idea there was a difference between a shifter cable and a brake cable housing until I was trying to figure out why my Shimano Nexus 8 speed hub wasn't shifting properly. I purchased a used bike and replaced all of the bike's cables and housings, which were old and rusted. The brakes were excellent, but the transmission was terrible. I thought I'd bought a bike with a broken hub because it would slam and slam between gears, not engage at times, then engage again. At other times, engage. br>br>However, even the smartest people make mistakes, and I found myself researching this ever-changing topic. I was reading forum after forum about how the hub needed to be serviced or how the cable tension needed to be re-adjusted. Finally, I found a post where someone mentioned that the shifter cable housing was different on the inside but looked the same from the outside. My mind has been blown! The housing for the brake cable is made of a single strand of wire wrapped in a circular pattern, whereas the housing for the shifter cable is made of multiple strands of wire running in the same direction as the housing. This means that the brake cable housing is extremely strong and flexes slightly, whereas the shifter cable housing is weaker but does not flex. When you replace a shifter with a brake cable housing (many cheaper department store bikes come with brake cable housing for the shifters), this flex makes shifting extremely difficult. br>br>I was planning to get a spool of Shimano housing, but due to the quantity and cost, I decided to try Sunlite's option because I've used their parts on many of my bikes. I'm happy to report that my shifting is fixed, and it wasn't the hub, but rather a poor choice of housing on my part. It's crazy because I've had many high-end bikes, from Kestrel road bikes to a Catrike If I had tried those bikes, I would have encountered the same problems as I did with my Nexus hub. br>br>If you're looking for a shifter cable housing, this option is a good value. I believe you can get it cheaper per foot if you buy in bulk, but housings aren't changed very often unless you don't do regular maintenance on your bike or ride in inclement weather frequently. With the bikes I have, I'm confident that this roll will last me a long time.

It works on all types of bicycles
5/5

I do a lot of work on bicycles, and replacing cables is probably the most common thing I do. Cable kits can be quite costly, and the cost quickly adds up. I simply purchase this housing cable roll and then purchase the inexpensive inner cable packs separately. Both vintage (friction) and modern (indexed) shifters have performed admirably with these. There are no problems.

Good living quarters
4/5

Likable. This housing kit is one of my favorites because you get a good amount of it at a good price. It isn't as rigid as some competitors' brands, but it appears to function similarly. br>br>Even though the liner is smooth, I used FINISHLINE Teflon Dry Lubricant to lubricate it. br>br>I use Shimano stainless steel inner cables with it. This is a fantastic match. br>br>Buy this if you own a small business or if you have a garage full of bikes and need shift cables. I even use it on my Shimano Deore and Deore XT 2x/10 speed shift levers, and it works flawlessly. GreenCanyonOutfitters and Pyramid are to be thanked.

Smooth and adaptable Cables can rust inside the housing, so it's just as important to replace the sheathing as it is to replace the cable when it's time to update
5/5

When performing maintenance, replace both to get the smooth action you desire.

There were no ferrules included
3/5

I won't be able to properly address a quality issue until I obtain ferrules. It irritates me because it was stated in the question section that it did.

Great for the price; however, the cable thickness is narrower than the Shimano cable, indicating that it may not be as durable
4/5

However, it appears to function properly, and I enjoy working on my bike, so getting it in bulk for a low price is a good deal, especially considering that most bike shops charge $5 per linear foot.

I never used this because it took too long to arrive
3/5

It took too long to arrive, so I returned it. ($1/ft) is a reasonable price per foot.
