The cage enabled me to mount a water bottle (a Camelbak Podium Big Chill) on my top tube for the Dirty Kanza 200 gravel race. Water never made it out of the bottle, since the terrain was pretty brutal. There is one disadvantage - every now and then my legs would rub against the bottle (maybe once every hour or so).
