Not even close to being hot! My son and I use them to protect ourselves from the sun while fishing, and they work great!
I'd go with a small or medium for a 9-year-old, depending on his height. My son is about six feet tall and wears a large. He was 12 when he got the shirt, and now he's 13, and it's getting a little small.
I checked the Columbia website's size chart to make sure I was ordering the correct size for my child.
It had a big impact on my 10-year-old son. Now that he's 11, the clothes are fitting him better. However, it is unmistakably a children's size.

Because they run a little big, I prefer to buy a size smaller than my child's. In this case, I bought a size xxs, and my child is 5 years old.
I bought this shirt in both the youth L and XL sizes for myself (I'm 5'6" and weigh about 125 pounds). I have the women's version of this shirt in a size M, but I wanted to try the youth size because it is significantly less expensive. I believe the youth L is the most similar to a women's M, with the exception that the sleeves are slightly shorter. I was surprised to discover that the youth XL was much too big for me; the shirt itself was too long, as were the sleeves. br>Overall, I think the shirt is great; it's made of a light, comfortable material that also protects you from the sun. I prefer the women's sizes, but the youth sizes are comparable, and the XL has sufficient arm length. br>I've uploaded a few photos to show how a women's M compares to a youth L and XL (the women's shirt is the purple one in the middle, the youth XL is white, and the youth L is blue).
Keep in mind that the color of the Gulf Stream is more green than light blue, as shown in the image. br>Also, getting the correct Columbia size took some time, and the sleeves are too long in general. This one (boys Large) is for a person who stands 1. 65 meters tall and weighs 60 kilograms.
The ideal shirt for summers, and if you live on an island where summer lasts 365/366 days a year, believe me when I say it's fantastic. The fit and style are both very modern, which is something I value greatly. My son always looks good in it, and it's very comfortable, so he can wear it while playing and swimming. Another thing to keep in mind is that I believe it runs a little large. My son is eight and a half years old, weighs 71 pounds, and wears a size small.
I bought an XS (6-inch) for those who are curious about the size. 8) For my son, who usually wears a 5T in most shirts (I figured it would be a little loose, but it would last us two summers). This shirt is way too big in every way, but particularly in the sleeves. I'd say he's been wearing it for about two years. It's a lovely shirt, but it does run a little big.
br>I received the red color, which differs from the photo in that it is a much darker red tone, which I prefer to the plain, primary red in the photo.
The material is breathable and light, just like the adult version, so it can be worn even on the hottest days. I like the blue as well.
My husband, brothers, father, and sons all enjoy Columbia products. For our doors, this is ideal. Hunting, fishing, and bird watching are some of the activities available. It is cool, comfortable, and provides sun protection.
