Selected User Reviews For YAKIMA, DeadLock Security Cable for Bike Racks, Secures to Hitch Mount Rack
The Deadlock is compatible with Yakima's Kingpin bike rack, according to the company's literature. What they don't tell you is that the Kingpin's design was updated in 2012. Older models, such as mine, have metal tabs at the end of the arm (as shown in the photo) that prevent the Deadlock's plastic end cap from slipping off. the section where the bike lock cable is kept- preventing it from being attached to the rack To make it work, I may have to cut the tabs off. This is something I'm hesitant to do. Another feature of the Deadlock is that it secures the bike rack to the trailer hitch. I'm not sure it will work because the lock's fit to the hitch pin isn't very tight. We'll see what happens when I take it on a long trip.
br>br>My bike rack is quite old, so I was relieved to discover that this lock was compatible; however, the lock that goes on the rack pin does not fit, so I'll have to upgrade that to keep the bike rack safe, as I keep it on my truck almost all of the time during the summer months.
Don't make the mistake of thinking that this lock will keep your bike safe for an extended period of time; it's only good for a few minutes. It's also not intended to be used to secure all of your bicycles. Only the one closest to the end of the rack is locked, making it impossible for a would-be thief to gain access to the bikes behind it. I add a U-shape to it. If I'm going to be gone for more than a few minutes, I'll use a lock and a kryptonite cable. It is, however, extremely useful for its intended purpose.
I bought a used Yakima rack that had a cable lock, but the seller had misplaced the key, so I bought this to replace the original cable. I was dismayed to discover that the new cable is only half as thin as the original. Any cable is, in my opinion, "security theatre" - It won't stop a determined person with bolt cutters from riding a bike, but I was hoping for a higher-quality product from a company with a name like Yakima.
The hitch lock and cable lock were sold together as a package. I only needed the hitch lock, but I couldn't find anyone who sold it separately, so I ended up paying more for something I didn't need. Both items are of high quality and arrived promptly. I simply do not use the cable lock because I already own one that is more compatible with my bike rack.
This locking set complements the Yakima Double-Handed Double-Handed Double-Handed Double-Hand Bike rack that attaches to the hitch. Your entire rack, as well as the bikes on the rack, must be secured to the hitch. There is still an exposed bolt at the rack's hinge that could be removed with the right sized wrench - However, they would still be left with only half of a rack and would have to cut the connecting lock off. You're really just keeping honest people honest, as with most things in life; if someone truly wants something, they'll figure out a way to get it no matter what. br>br>My only criticism of this lock is that you can't prevent someone from removing the bike lock from its nesting space when it's not being used as a bike lock; you have to lock it to itself, rendering the nesting capabilities useless. However, it isn't a bad thing. I'd still buy it if I had the money - When you have a built-in nesting space to stow the lock, I just think it's a little bad design.
it fits! The locking pin hole for securing the unit to the bike rack was not properly aligned. To make it work, I had to increase the hole size.
It's impossible to overestimate how simple it is to use this bicycle carrier. It was simple to assemble, and installing and uninstalling it was also simple. I was concerned that it didn't appear to grip much of the trailer hitch, but I assume it does because I've had no issues using it. In general, the quality is exceptional. In addition, the instructions were simple to follow.
