Both of them are used for me. In addition to using both hands for yoga practices and plank positions, I also have a joint condition that affects my right knee. Weighing the items does not result in any difference. Although, I prefer the wooden ones owing to the grip - wood feels better in the hand. These are great for me at 105 pounds and do not budge regardless of how much weight I have.
The 12 inch is the perfect height and weight for my wife. She is 5'9" and 125 pounds.
