Update For the guests to sign, I purchased sharpie fine point markers. You should not touch the writing after using it to prevent smearing because it is tough to remove. Since people are not paid to sign this as a guestbook, just letting them know if they want to sign up too. It is still a favorite of mine, and my daughter enjoyed it too.
I got it in order So far, it has held up well to the elements because it is heavy, sturdy, and well constructed. There are no spikes included with the device, but it looks as though there are spots underneath where you can place spikes to secure it. It may not be easy to move, but it will. After about 200 pitches, it has moved an inch or two per pitch. It is sitting on loose dirt. The plate does not appear to move much at all when you step on it or run over it.
All the players needed was a ballpoint pen to sign the book. It was the perfect gift for the coach, especially the story of how "keeping home plate to 17 inches" was achieved.

A solid foundation. It has sufficient mass so that it does not move too much when my little boys are playing baseball and kick ball in the backyard. It also helped my youngest son become more proficient at batting.
