There is a bit of a difference in size. A size seven is the right size for my son, who is nine. I find the most frustrating aspect of the color shifting to be the speed at which it fades. We purchased four of these (swim team) and they've all faded within a couple of It is evident in the picture how faded the blue is They are the same color as the originals. I was really disappointed in the color, since the original color of the shorts matched his swim team colors, but this washed out color came out after about a few swimming sessions.

That's the best way to do it. There are no disappointments when it comes to this brand. The material is very good and it is very comfortable. I would not be concerned about the sand bothering my son when he plays at the beach. It was exactly what I needed. A size 5 fits my son when he turns 6 in four months, I have spent less than $400 on it I would recommend going one size up for your child if they are overweight.
