Whether you need to break in a new horse depends on its size. It has happened to me a few times to tie them up. You might want to double the length of the surcingle to the bit length. There are 216 inches to the draw reins (horses) or 180 inches to the draw reins (ponies). If you are in the 108inch range or 90inchrange, you should be fine.
A horse size of 216" long total, and each rein is 108" long, make up these reins, which measure 5/8" wide.
