Is the waistband on these breeches quite high?

Yes, the waist is quite high, but it is also quite comfortable. I usually wear a size 28, but these required a size 30.

I'm a size 12 in the UK and an 8 in the US. In these, what size should I go for?

I ordered a size 16 because I'm a US 16 and thought they were true to size. They are a perfect fit.

I'm not sure what size 8/26" means. The number 8 represents a medium level of difficulty. The size of a large 26" is considered small. xsmall. Is the inseam 26" and the size is 8?

It appears that I was also perplexed by the sizing! I purchased the 8/26 size for my daughter as a Christmas present, and they were smaller than I had anticipated. She is 5'4" tall and weighs 100 pounds, and her breeches are a size 26. The length was good, but the fit was a little tight. They were adorable, but I would order a size larger next time!

Fits perfectly, is stretchy for riding, and slimming

These are for my equestrian daughter, who is 12 years old. She stands 5'5" tall and weighs 140 pounds, with long legs and a muscular build. These were a perfect fit for her (size 10 / 28"). She finds them to be very comfortable to ride in because they have a lot of stretch, and the fit and styling are very appealing at the barn and out in public. She enjoys wearing them while hacking out in the saddle and with a bareback pad. I'd buy them again in a heartbeat. She's tried a variety of "denim" knee patches and full seat breaches, but these are by far her favorites in terms of comfort and fit. They're worth the money; the waistband is a little tight, so I wasn't sure if I should size up for her. She, on the other hand, was adamant about not changing them.

These are a close second. They have a very appealing appearance. The fabric has plenty of stretch, and the design's small details are stylish; however, the sizing runs slightly small; If you're unsure about your size or don't want your breeches to be too tight, go up a size. They do not, unfortunately, fit my body type. I'm long- I'm short-waisted, so these are perfect. I am not a fan of rise breeches.

I'm 5'6" and 130 pounds, so I went with the 10/28 size; I could have gone with a smaller size, but I like how stretchy they are for riding, especially when I'm at the barn or in the saddle for long periods of time. I'm going to buy more. The only "complaint" is that they aren't the warmest for riding in the winter, but they will be ideal in the spring and summer.
