I took the package out and began peeling the labels off

The stain on the mahogany peels off before the package is opened. Often made from cheap wood with what looks like mahogany stained or painted. When I opened the package, I found bits of peeled stain all over my counter because of how the stain peeled. It was put back into its original paper shipping bag with peels still on (and a refund was asked for). After cleaning up the mess, it was time to put away everything.
