It should lock up on the slide. I have a Glock 34 and had to modify it a little bit to make it lock up well, but otherwise, it should work as intended.
You are right. This is a retention holster, with a thumb release on the body side. It's a very nice holster indeed. I have no problems using it on my P220.

A quality holster that fits my Glock 17 perfectly and is exceptionally well made, the thumb lock is very convenient. It has a locking feature that I needed, and it is made very well. am taking off one star not because it is poor quality or anything, but because it is not a small, light gun, I am more likely to be satisfied with a paddle mount to help disperse the weight and feel less bouncy, and this is an Generally speaking, it's a really nice holster that fits nicely.
If pulled at just the right angle or with enough force, this holster will release without having to use the thumb release. It is a cheap holster designed for mall security at best. There is so much sway in it that your Glock will rattle as you climb stairs or run. It seems like it may be a replica of Safariland.
My G17 fits extremely well in this holster, and it retains it well. We were very pleased with the quality and performance of the product. With almost daily use for the past several months, I am perfectly satisfied with this holster. I have bought two more of this model for other.

The product fits my Glock 35 perfectly. I bought it based on the feedback that it would. This is not the case. should fit in a holster, however the retaining mechanism is not working. As of now, it works flawlessly with my G23 and I have given it 5/5 stars.
The way I expected it to be. I am able to fit a Glock G22 Gen4 in it perfectly.
