The green pad that comes with the call can be used to scratch up the slate. For those who don't have one of those pads, you can use a green Scotch Bright Keep in mind to also clean the end of your striker.

According to the box call, it might or might not matter. It is my experience that a box call for this price is not effective at all (and it does not sound like a turkey call). If you practice with this slate for a day or two, you should be able to call in some gobblers with no problem, assuming that the tom wants to be called and isn't paired with a hen.

My hunting buddy who was much more skilled at calling, Old Betsy, was going to do most of the calling, because he was much more experienced with it. There have been some high-zoot slate and glass and box calls for him and he has had a lot of success with them so far. The three of us went for a three day semi-expedition When I asked my guide if I could practice some calls on our hunt in east Kansas, they said they were still having no luck. Calling is the first thing that old Betsy answers, and she answers with a gobbler! I then made an unsolicited call for at least 10 or 20 minutes and he answered every single one! In the end, he ends up 30 feet behind us in the woods. We eventually spook him in order to get a shot (note to turkey hunters everywhere--don't spook him! It may be a good idea to bring a fan if you're going to poke your head over a little berm). It was the same thing again in the afternoon, but this time it was Bettsy who was on the hook for about twenty Contact us at I call you gobble, call you call me. . . Luckily, my buddy, bless his heart, had a shot but was letting me have it instead. I paused again and tried to work with the gun while he got behind us. It is difficult to get the gun up when using slate calls because you only have two hands. The Tom walked right past the decoy and went behind us before the gun could be raised. Eventually, he got bored and took another strut in front of us on his way out, and then he got up and left. The hunt was a great success for me and the dog. I don't know if it was just those specific birds, if I still called as ineptly as I did, or if Betsy just had a special harmonic that day, but she certainly was focused. It's the truth. I wouldn't sell her for ten times what I paid and I wouldn't even consider selling her for five.
I would like to thank you for this call. As part of my box call, which I really enjoy, I thought I would try a couple of new things this year. The slate call and the one-handed box call I bought were from the same retailer. It was a bad one handed call. I just couldn't get good sounds out of it no matter how hard But, this slate call brought in three hens right away in the morning and kept them interested for the rest of the day. I was very pleased by the wide variety of calls it could make, both loud and soft. I had no trouble learning how to use a slate call even though it was my first time using one.
The gobbling began as I was walking through the woods, so I picked a tree to sit against and called. I had both a hen and a gobbler respond at the same time. I cluck back and forth with the hens a little while, and I could tell they were headed I was walking at 5 yards away from two hens when two young ones walked past me. A tom stepped out of 20 yards away five minutes later. The first time I used this call I literally called for 10 minutes before bagging my first bird.
The second time I used this call at least four different toms responded to it. Called in one about 40 yards from the dock. It was probably also a good idea to have that shot, but my daughter didn't feel comfortable doing so.
One thing I would suggest is that you carry the green roughing pad at all times. Having forgotten to do that, when I returned home after the 2nd day of hunting, the call was too smooth and basically useless to use.
It sounds great, and the price is hard to beat. Having watched several YouTube videos and practiced with the call for a while, I think I have a good grasp of the basics of it now. When you have a low price like this and it's so easy to set up, you can't possibly pass it up if you don't already have one. It has not yet been used to call them in, but I can tell you the calls I've been able to make it produce after practice sound very similar to the calls I have used to call in hens in the past.
The scratch call (turkey call) I used was easy to use, and it sounds like a real call. This was my favorite product until I realized that it was available for half the price at Walmart. I can't speak to the quality of the call in Walmart. I feel this is another example of hiding the cost of shipping.
The green belt behind our house is a thriving habitat for a lot of wildlife. In addition to the wild turkeys, there are also owls. Watching YouTube videos was the first thing I did on the first day I got it. My attention was drawn to a turkey that I started calling. As he was getting closer, he turned around and went back to where he had come from. He then started walking away from me, and I could see him at that point. It has been over a year since I was able to call in a turkey. If I were hungry, I would still be hungry, so it appears to be a problem with me. I got to try it out, though it was fun.
It was not my first time using pot calls and I've used others before. Despite being familiar with pot calls, this is my first purchase of one. So far, I'm pretty happy with the results - clucks, purrs, and yelps are all pretty easily coaxed The first few minutes of practicing were all it took to get a decent sound out of my wife, who has never used a call before. The call is tuned well and has a good pot, but it is made entirely out of plastic rather than wood, and the sound board is slate. For a beginner, it is ideal. I think it is a good deal at the price. If I had to buy it again, I would.
It sounded a little iffy having been scratched a few times. spending a lot of time and trying different methods, even having others who hunt test it, it just wasn't working. The scratch surface was made of some kind of junky stuff that doesn't produce a usable sound. Even after I followed the cleaning instructions correctly, I could not get the surface to It would be better to save your money and just purchase a better one at a store where you can see it is working.
