I want to know how large it is. As a 6'3" slim person, I am quite physically fit. The weight of the athlete is 190 pounds. The medium is effective, but can it be repurposed? I do not want fitting too loose or too baggy! ?

You may need to go up to medium if your chest is larger than 190cm. In my opinion, a large size is best.

Can I fit into a medium since I am 5'8" and 180 pounds?

It is likely that it would fit me. I'm 5'8" and 210 lbs, and a large fits my broad shoulders well, but a large will be cumbersome around my waist.

Is there any way to count the pockets? In what part of the country do they live?

A total of five pockets can be found. Two large shell pockets are located at the bottom of each side of the front, one in front of the other, and they are trimmed in solid brown. You can also find a picture of the back by doing a web search. It has a very large pocket across the bottom of the back which can be accessed from either side. My husband highly recommends this vest because it is so well made.
