I keep it in my golf bag with the putter, and it can hold the putter as well as a few other clubs, keeping them off wet ground. It's very useful.
A towel could be hung on the part of the club that holds it, but it would most likely slip down and end up on the ground. So, no, I'd say this item's sole purpose is to keep your clubs from sinking into the wet grass. You could drape your towel over your clubs, I suppose.
The length is 30 inches. 1/4 inch is the width. Very rigid.

Great holder, especially if you play early in the morning when the course is still wet and your grips are still dry. It can easily accommodate two clubs. However, be aware that it is easy to leave two clubs on the last green at first; keep them between you and the cart or your exit from the green until you have become accustomed to looking for your clubs standing up rather than laying down. I liked the bright color, but it wasn't quite bright enough to stand out against the green (I chose blue).
I had one and it was extremely useful when the ground was wet because it allowed me to keep a couple of clubs dry.
Lightweight and compact, it can be stowed in any golf bag slot. It won't slide into the bag because of the hook design on top. When you're away from the cart, this is ideal because you won't have to worry about leaving clubs on the ground and forgetting to pick them up after your swing.
I bought it to keep one of my clubs from getting wet in the morning when I'm just off the green with two clubs. When I walk off the green, I can also see the club. I've forgotten to pick up clubs because I didn't look before I left.
The metal isn't as thick as some stands I've seen, but it works well in keeping my grips dry on dewy mornings and reducing the number of times I bend over to pick up clubs.
I despise getting my grips and gloves wet on the course because of the humidity. It fits perfectly in my golf bag's putter slot and is made of a light but sturdy material.
To provide pandemic entertainment, I built a fake driving range in my backyard. The addition of this club stand was ideal! It's sturdy and the perfect height.
