It measures approximately one and a quarter inches wide by three and a quarter inches tall. It's not a particularly large space. However, the shirt is quite attractive.
For a 6-year-old, I recommend a size Small. However, you could measure his waist and use the Boys size chart to determine his size; my son is 12 and we ordered an XL. The chart was accurate for his waist size, so round up. They develop at such a rapid rate.

For my sons' awards day at school, I ordered two of the Under Armour Boys' Match Play Polos in the same size, SM, but in different colors. Both shirts have the same size listed on the tag, but the Volcano shirt fits more like an XS, while the Red shirt I ordered fits true to size. After digging a little deeper, I discovered that the Volcano (orange) shirt was made in Indonesia, while the Red Polo was made in Jordan. Very let down. If you want to order this shirt, keep in mind that the fit will vary depending on which country manufactured the shirt you'll get, and you won't know until you get it. I tried to return it, but it said I had to have it mailed back the same day I got it via UPS, and I won't be able to make it across town in time.
My 6- year old is 48-year-old The sleeves and length were both too short for someone who was 49 inches tall. This shirt is still very nice, so I'm going to exchange it for a size Small! For the first day of school, this is perfect!.

It's a big hit with my 13-year-old son. He is required to wear polo shirts to school, and the majority of them are thick and hot. This one is still looking nice and cool three months later.
This shirt (in white) is made of a thick, heavy material. Not at all what we had hoped for. My son has a few other UA golf shirts that are also excellent, but they are lighter in weight. I've never had a problem with the quality of UA shirts, so if you want something a little more substantial, the quality should be fine.
This was a part of my son's school uniform. He enjoyed the aridity of the environment. Instead of his usual polo shirts, he opted for a more fitted option.
It was a perfect fit for my grandson, and despite his dislike of wearing dressier clothes, he wore it without complaint.
