Although the holders do not have a lined interior, they are wide enough that the bars are easily inserted without rubbing against one another. The sleeves of the bars do not appear to be damaged.
This is not sure whether a hex bar would work with it. That tree holds my iron plates, so its strength can be seen by what I use it for. only problem with bumper plates is that you won't be able to fit many on them since they all have the same diameter and you can only fit pegs with that diameter on the bottom. Those that are smaller (not lighter, but smaller) are meant for smaller weights.

We purchased this to store about 450lbs of plates, and it has worked perfectly. My last weight tree was so flimsy and unstable. This one seemed to be so sturdy and easy to build for me. I can now have my fractional plates and collars stored without blocking any other plates, as I have 7 places to hang them.
There is one thing to note, however The casters on this tree raised the height of the tree by a few inches, which will not permit a standard length Olympic bar to fit in my room, which has 8 foot high ceilings. In my opinion, wheels would be a better option for me than having a different tree, because I'd rather just have to install a wall mount for my barbell rather than having to install I just wanted to remind you of this.
