What is the nature of this substance?

It's made of some sort of polyester, smooth on the outside and brushed on the inside, and while it's marketed as expedition weight, it's actually quite thin, good for a first layer but not thick enough for a cold ski day on its own. Depending on the weather, I layer one or two pairs of thicker expedition long johns over these. On the other hand, I despise being cold and dress warmer than most people.
