No, I do not believe that is true.
Whether you prefer form-fitting or loose clothing is a personal preference. So choose between Medium and Large. These, on the other hand, I returned because they were of poor quality.
They do last quite a while. My guess is that the length in the large will be longer. I'm wearing a size 2xl, and they're almost to my knees.
I'd get a large because I'm 5' 8" and 185 pounds, and large fits me well.

I'm only 5'9" and weigh 190 pounds, but I have a 42" chest, so I ordered an XL based on the sizing chart, expecting them to be a little small. The fit would have been fine because I prefer a loose fit, but the length would have put them below my buttocks. I guess they assume that anyone with a 42" chest is at least 6' tall. I exchanged them for a size L, which fit almost perfectly. Perhaps a tad too tight across the chest. The L is about 4" shorter in length than the XL, but it's still pretty darn perfect.
EDIT: I just placed an order for a second set in various colors. I like these a lot.
I bought these to wear while running, and they're great in the summer heat. For all that sweat, they're light, breathable, and absorbent. Just be cautious when it comes to sizing. I usually dress in a size large. My height is 6'2" and my weight is 190 pounds. However, the large shirts fit more like an XL. I ordered three more because they're long and wide. I ordered a pack of mediums and they fit perfectly, so I recommend going down a size from your usual size. On the plus side, I can wear the mediums for running and the larges for loungewear because they're both very comfortable!.
They are extremely quick to dry!.
I've finally found the one tank top that beats them all. They don't hug tightly around the midsection (so no busted can of biscuits appearance), they're not cut super low under the arm pits (so no side boob action), and they really define your traps. They're my favorite tank top right now, and they'll be for the rest of my life.
The shirts are in great condition, and the item is exactly as described. They're of good craftsmanship. I'm about 5'7" tall and weigh around 145 pounds. I ordered a medium, but they were far too large for me. I went with the smalls because they fit better, but the bottoms of the shorts flare out more than I like. However, that is merely a matter of personal taste. Everything is in good working order, including the quality.
It fits perfectly around my chest without having to stretch at all at 5'10" and 215 pounds with a 45" chest, but it's not at all tapered around the waist, so even with my dad bod gut it's a little baggy. It's likely that a US Medium would be more 'tailored' for me.
The three sizes received aren't all the same size. The first one I tried was extremely tight around the arms and felt like a medium or smaller size. I checked to make sure I didn't get the wrong size, and it was clearly marked as xlg. So I tried on another, and it was almost the same size as the first. I haven't gotten to the third level yet. I've previously ordered from this company and was pleased with the results. This order is a little different. They changed the material pattern, which has resulted in sizing issues as well as the migration of side seams to the front. I gave it two stars because it almost fits one of the categories. At 190 pounds and 6 feet tall, I'm not a particularly large man. I should probably rerun them, but it's not worth the trouble.
Perfect for working out and "getting buff" or bouncing around on a hot day in the streets. In terms of overall design, Maker has done an excellent job. I would have given this a perfect 5 star rating if the material hadn't changed from a mesh-like material when I ordered it months ago to the tight woven I received this week.
