Despite their light weight and plastic construction, they are very durable. The only purpose of using these is to build core muscle in the water. In the beginning, you start with the circular paddles wide open for less resistance in the water, then you gradually close a little more of the paddle, making it harder to exercise with them. When I used them in physical therapy, I found them to be so effective that I bought a few myself.
The paddle vents help you get a good workout, just ease into them at first. I've had these for a while, took about a month to learn how to use them with the paddle vents closed.
