Using the Yamaha 150 four-stroke, I found these to be quite effective. In addition, their soft and flexible ears will prevent the paint on your lower drive from being scratched. Yet the compliance of the cup becomes the crux of the matter. Due to the cups' compliant nature, they become almost flat against the engine when installed, so there is almost no force exerted at the edge of the cups against the lower unit uptake, so they do a poor job of preventing leaks. In a cup that's nearly flat, I worry there's little fluid flow at the center compared to the outside. As it turned out, the telltale was Considering stretching the metal spring so that less force is applied to the cups, I think the water would leak past the cup edges since they are soft. After considering the item for awhile, I decided I would not deform it as I tried to make it work better, and returned it instead.

Worked for me

Upon attaching the hose to the water, the unit pulls away from the inlet on the outboard motor due to its weight. Over the motor, I ran a house water hose to keep it in place and prevent sagging.
