To begin with, I was blown away when I first took them out of the box. They were well milled, and there were no flaws that I noticed. The wood, on the other hand, was unfinished but had been sanded to a high degree of smoothness. However, there are some things that could be done better. Understand that there are no instructions on how to sand/finish these because you could probably use them with your hands (indoors) but I wanted to make them look/feel a little nicer. br>br>I went to Lowe's and bought a bottle of Butcher Block Conditioner (food-grade mineral oil) for ten dollars. Howard's natural waxes) and a few dollars' worth of 800 grit sand paper What I did next isn't rocket science, and I'm not a woodworker, as you can get your YouTube PhD in a matter of minutes. I sanded them once more to make them much smoother and work out the tiny little burrs (which aren't a problem). After that, I gave them a generous coat of Howard oil and waited about 20 minutes for them to dry. After it was [mostly] dry, I applied some oil to sandpaper and gave it a good wet sanding, wiped them off, added a little more oil, and let it dry for another 20 minutes. After that, apply a second coat of oil and let it dry overnight. Note: I didn't use gloves because the oil was not irritating to my skin. I was able to wash it away with regular Dawn dish soap. They were very smooth in the morning, with a lot of oil grip and a sharp appearance. They aren't sticky, and I don't anticipate them slipping out of my hands. The sanding/oiling process can be repeated as many times as your attention span allows.
