No, instead, pick a ball that is more suitable for children. This is a full-size ball with professional qualities that an 8-year-old cannot fully appreciate. Because it's too big for his hands, it either becomes a trophy or a yard decoration that Dad enjoys seeing on display, or it's thrown away. If he still has an interest after he graduates from college, get it for him.
Several years ago, I bought the same football from either Dick's Sporting Goods or Sports Authority - I'm not sure which one I'm talking about. Since I left the other one in New York state, I ordered the same football from Amazon. The football I bought from a sporting goods store is almost identical to the one I got from Amazon. I didn't notice any tackiness in the footballs I bought from Target or Walmart, but the one I got from Amazon is of good quality.
The football I bought as a present for a friend had no string coming out of the end. It appears that there is a problem.
YES. It was inflated when it arrived.

It's not even close to being an official game ball. Details that should have been stamped into the leather have been screened printed on, and the printed graphics aren't even clear. The front of the jersey has a scratched NFL 100 logo and shield. Very let down. And I'm familiar with the appearance of a genuine game ball. I used to work as a referee.
It's incredible, and probably the best ball I've ever handled; just keep it away from cement and other easily scratchable surfaces. This isn't some cheap composite ball that can go through hell and back and still be fine; keep it on some nice grass and it'll be fine, but if it comes into contact with cement or anything similar, consider it damaged; it'll still work, but it won't feel the same.
My new "The Duke" NFL Game Ball arrived today. It's the real deal. This NFL Game Ball was "handcrafted in Ada, Ohio," according to the custom-made cardboard display box it arrived in. A video of how the ball is made in Ada, Ohio can be found on YouTube. Genuine leather is used to make the ball. It's lovely to look at, and the leather skin's texture is wonderful to hold. This new The Duke NFL Game Ball (signed by Roger Goodell, Commissioner) replaces an NFL Game Ball signed by Commissioner Pete Rozelle that I had for 35 years. The air blader started leaking air after 35 years. I'm hoping that the new The Duke NFL Game Ball will last as long as the previous one.
This football was purchased for my nephew as a present. I wish I had taken a photo before handing it over to him because not only was the color a light beige (when it should have been brown), but the printing of "The Duke" was badly smudged, as were other words on the football. When I spend $100 on a football, I expect it to be perfect. Because of its extreme lightness, I almost believe the football was a fake. I've handled and played with official NFL footballs before, but I've never seen one made as badly as this one. The next time I need one, I'll order it from the NFL's official website.
You'll have this ball for a long time. The ball on the right is a 2008 official ball. Because my bladder was leaking, I purchased "The Duke. " It took me about three weeks to break in and achieve the desired atmosphere. The Wilson football prep conditioner was used first, followed by Wilson football tack spray and the Wilson brush. I tossed it around at the Bucs tailgate, and the spirals were tight and catching the ball was simple. I hope this has been of assistance.
The Duke was the ideal present for a friend of mine who used to play quarterback for our college intramural team and whom I haven't seen in years. He did a fantastic job. He was overjoyed when he received it in the mail, and it reminded him of our college days.
I paid a lot of money for this, and I had no idea pig skin could behave in this way.
