Plastic. Rust would develop on metal.
I'm sure they'd work well with acrylic; mine are on glass, but the glue strip has been holding up for years.
My black note arrived with a broken handle, so I simply ordered a replacement and went about my business.
One handle is included with the glass All Glass Aquarium AAG91235 aquarium cover. Additional handles, however, can be purchased for around $6 on Amazon. It's a fantastic design. If you want to save money, you can buy the spine that connects the two pieces of glass, as well as the plastic border in the back for the feeder and lines, and make your own cover by having a glass shop cut pieces to size; it will be less expensive, but it will allow for more customization and the use of heavier glass for safety.

We needed a replacement handle for an older thirty gallon aquarium we were recently given because the previous one was missing, and the fun of trying to open the top without anything to grasp had worn off by day four or five. This one was found online and fits perfectly on the glass table top. I'm not sure what else to say except that it's simple to remove the tape protection, simple to install, has a good price, ships quickly, and works as it should. If you need a replacement or want to upgrade your current handle, this is the one to go with.
These are excellent handles. I recently bought four more handles to replace the old ones that slid over the glass top's front edge. I'm not sure why people have given this product negative reviews; if you clean the glass thoroughly, mark the exact location where you want it, peel the backing off the handle, and press it firmly against the glass, you'll have a useful handle that looks good and lasts for years. I have 12 aquariums, and eight of them have Aqueon handles. On all of them now, I have these handles. I've never had a problem with any of my original eight, and I've had some of them for many years. This is a handle that I strongly suggest.
The product is fantastic in and of itself. I've had it for a while and it's still clinging to my glass fish aquarium cover! My issue is with how it is delivered. The first time I ordered it, it arrived in a large envelope bag, and as soon as I saw it, I knew it had to be broken due to the nature of the product. This plastic has a vertical handle and a flat bottom. The replacement, of course, was excellent. However, if it had come in a better package, I could have saved time and a trip to UPS for an item return. Yes, it arrived in the same envelope as the original. It was not harmed during delivery.
I bought this to make a proper lid for my Fluval CHI rimless cube, which houses a male Betta. br>I bought a 9"x8" sheet of plexiglass (3/16" thick) on ebay and used regular clear plastic glue to attach these four holders to it. This handle was purchased for ease of use. It's time to peel play. I initially mistook this for a generic handle, but it does say "Aqueon" and does not resemble the handle pictured. It's curved rather than square, and the color is dark brown rather than black. br>br>It's fine; just keep in mind that it's not exactly as shown here. br>It looks and performs admirably. So far, everything seems to be going swimmingly.
I've seen a lot of reviews claiming that it doesn't hold up, so here's what I found: make sure it's fully adhered, check the bottom for bubbles (the color will be different at the bubble spots), and try to avoid using it for 24 hours, checking if bubbles have formed if they did press it down again.
My husband had just bought a new fish tank and was trying to put the handle on the glass lid. Unfortunately, he put it in the wrong spot. So, after removing it from the incorrect location and attempting to move it, we discovered that the adhesion was not as strong as it should have been. As a result, we ordered this to replace it, and it's an exact match.
They are extremely efficient. All you have to do is clean the surface, use an alcohol pad, press it on for a minute, and leave it alone for 24 hours.
It is ideal for our 40 gallon aquarium, which has a difficult-to-pick-up glass lid. We just wanted a second one for the other side so we could easily open it from both sides.
