We were told not to leave Halties/Gentle Leaders or leashes on service dogs if they were out of our sight when we were raising them for Canine Companions for Independence because they can learn to remove them. Chewing is in the same boat. If you have to keep it on, you might want to invest in a spray that prevents chewing. Better yet, schedule sessions when the dog is unaware that you are present, and squirt them with a 10:1 solution of water and vinegar every time they go to chew. It won't harm them, and it's a great way to discourage bad habits. BUT you must be 100% consistent and do not allow them to see you doing it.
I've had two of these in my life. At four months, my GSD was wearing a medium. By 11 months, he was comfortably in a large with room to grow, weighing 80 pounds. Medium will not be too small for you, but you will eventually need to switch harnesses. Best of luck!

Failure of the Metal Chest Clip 2. D ring thread unraveling in the centerpull 1. Purchased in October of 2018 and delivered in March of 2019 The chest clip made of metal broke. This stuff is going to kill your dog. The Dog is connected to the lead by a D ring. When a dog's harness fails, he or she loses control of the dog, which can be fatal in traffic or in other dangerous situations. This harness would not meet military specifications or K-Security's requirements. Work with a Service Dog if you're under the age of nine. The single stitching at the stress point is a major design flaw, as well as poor quality control in the manufacturing process. The haness was reinforced by me. Because the manufacturing process is subpar, you should inspect your equipment every day before and after service to ensure that your dog is safe. Do not take to the streets until your and your partner's equipment has been thoroughly inspected.
