Questions & Answers

Is there a backlighting on the display?

Hello, the Kestrel 1000 does not have a backlight. Thanks!

What is the size of the data hold function's memory?

Hi, When you can't see the display, you can use the Data Hold function to take measurements. When the hold mode is activated by holding down the power button and then pressing the left arrow button, the current readings will be frozen until the hold mode is turned off. Take an airflow reading from a vent that is above your viewing angle, for example.

Is there a way to tell which way the wind is blowing?

Hello, the wind direction is not measured by the Kestrel 1000. The Kestrel 5500 is a good option. It has a built-in compass and can tell you what direction the wind is blowing.

Although Kestrel claims that their meters are designed and manufactured in the United States, mine arrived from Chengdu, China. Is this a forgery or a genuine product?

I can't speak for others, but all of our Kestrels come from the manufacturer, which is located right here in Pennsylvania. If Amazon fulfilled the order, it could have come from one of their Chinese fulfillment centers?

Selected User Reviews For Kestrel 1000 Pocket Wind Meter / Digital Anemometer

Excellent value for money in terms of an air flow meter; it's long-lasting, precise, and comes from a reputable company

- The Kestrel 1000 appears to be a SWEET SPOT FOR VALUE for those primarily interested in airflow/wind measurement. It is the first of 14 Kestrel models ranging in price from $75ish to $900ish, covering amateur and commercial/government uses. The Kestrel 1000, which costs around $75, has the same high-quality impeller, bearings, and mechanism as their more expensive commercial and ballistics models. br>br>I recommend checking out their other models on the Nielsen Kellerman website before committing to this one. br>br>DESCRIPTION:

Air velocity meters with impellers are referred to as impeller-based air velocity meters.

- In the United States, the product was designed, tested, and assembled. (owned by Nielsen Kellerman, which owns Kestrel), which, one assumes, assisted them in selling tens of thousands of kestrel meters to the United States. the government and the military PROS: br>br>
-

- 3% ACCURACY, each unit is certified and tested individually (confirmed by the company). The certificate contains all of the information about how the certification was completed.

- CERTIFICATION FROM A THIRD PARTY IS AVAILABLE FOR A FEE (National Institute of Standards and Technology)br>br>- MIL- MIL-SPEC DROP TESTED, SPEC DROP TESTED STD- 810F (procedure 4) and 810G (procedure 1). All 26 points of impact were tested with the same unit (Spec 810 allows for five units, but doing it with one is clearly more conservative). The test was not carried out by a third party, but you can do it yourself for $75 and a concrete floor:). Separate tests revealed that when drops are repeated, the impeller is the first component to fail, and that the Kestrel units can be easily and cheaply replaced.

You may need to wait for them to return for knowledgeable support after covering for them, which usually takes about a week. In the event that you receive a fill-in, Don't pass judgment on the company; they seem to be consistently excellent in terms of customer service. br>br>CONS:
-

- I can't think of anything significant for the price point, though it would be nice if it had a backlight like some of their higher-end models do, and it would be nice if it was more legible from side angles since the meter isn't always between us and the air flow source. EXPERIENCE WITH SWAPPING IMPELLERS:
- br>br>I ordered a replacement impeller (fan) and paid extra for next-day delivery, and it was a breeze to replace. The old is simply pushed out and the new is pushed in. Just make sure you only push on the impeller's outer edges, and that the triangle is on the same side as the display, as with the mini-computer. It is required by the instructions. KESTREL'S INSTRUCTIONS: br>br>
-

- The triangle on the impeller located at the top front face of the Kestrel should be used to calibrate and test wind speed.

- The accuracy of an anemometer with moving parts will deteriorate after several hours of operation at 56 mph (4,923 ft/min). After that, you can replace the impeller for a fraction of the price of the meter. IF LOOKING FOR EXTREMELY HIGH ACCURACY, OR MEASURING ACCURATELY VERY LOW OR VERY HIGH SPEEDS: br>br>
-

- Take a look at Gill Instruments' ultrasonic 2D and 3D anemometers, for example, which have no moving parts.

- Another excellent piece of writing. Kanomax, such as the Kanomax 6803 Vane Anemometer, is an excellent final option. IF YOU'RE LOOKING FOR AN EVEN BETTER DEAL,br>br>AIR FLOW METER:
-

- Take into account the weather conditions WM- 2 as a place to start your investigation. I verified with their company that their accuracy is % of display value rather than % of top of the range, which helps abundantly with low speed accuracy.

Excellent anemometer with a high degree of accuracy
5/5

This anemometer is really cool. There are less expensive models, and it was tempting, but air velocity is critical for more accurate flow calculations, and I am familiar with and trust Kestrel products. The others have a lot of bells and whistles, but the fan bearings are critical to accuracy, so why take a chance on an off-shore product for such important measurements? It is highly recommended.

Accuracy in a small package I was the previous owner of this unit
5/5

It's small enough to fit in my field bag, and it's as accurate as the NOAA tower on-the-ground. As a result, I can instantly determine whether or not construction crane lifts are possible or whether it is safer to wait due to wind speed.

I preferred it to the weather brand, which I had to return
4/5

It works. I preferred it to the weather brand, which I had to return. Just by looking at the fan, you could tell it was of good quality. Even a slight breeze is picked up by this one. It would be nice if they included the wind direction as well.

It's about the size of a phone
5/5

There's a lot of functionality in a device that's about the size of a cellphone. Gives you everything you need to fly your drone, set up that long-range shot, or figure out if you're about to pass out from too much physical exertion.

I'm very pleased
5/5

Only bought to learn what actual wind speeds are and then compare them to how trees and other objects in my environment react to them. I'm glad I did because my initial assumptions were completely incorrect.

Love it! This small wind meter does exactly what it says on the tin - it measures wind speed and direction
5/5

I would buy it again because it is compact, easy to use, and difficult to lose due to the neck cord; however, because replacement wind vanes are inexpensive, it should last a lifetime.

If you own a drone, this is a must-have
5/5

If you're a drone pilot, this is a must-have accessory. It's a great price, it works well, it's simple to use, and it comes with a great case cover. When compared to other sources, some have claimed a significant inaccuracy. I haven't discovered any problems, and the readings are consistent with those of my other anemometers.
