The opening has been enlarged to 3 1/2 x 4 1/4 inches as of March 2012.
The back opening is 2 inches wide. 75" x 2- ish. The down spout fits perfectly, but because it is oriented "landscape" rather than "portrait," I had to purchase a converter. You should be fine if your downspout is horizontal (landscape).
It connects to the downspout's end. There is no involvement with the gutter.

So, while these Gargoyles are beautiful, they don't even come close to holding the size downspout that they claim to be able to hold. To go in the Gargoyles, I attached plastic extendable downspout drains in the appropriate size. Even though the plastic downspouts were supposed to divert water away from my foundation, I had to cut them. Attempt to cram them into the back of the car. To secure them, I'll have to purchase super tape. This is something that the manufacturer could easily fix. Who wants a Gargoyle with a gaping hole in his back? If not for this, why is there no backend?.
Without being precious, this is a really cute character. I went with the dragon because I like how ironic it is that it breathes water rather than fire! It actually serves a purpose here; The downspout on our house has a four-inch diameter. When we had strong winds, a ft long extension would come loose and blow across the yard. Unfortunately, those winds usually occur when a storm is approaching, causing the downspout to be rendered useless just when it is needed. This is heavy enough to act as an anchor and keep the spout in place. Only a tablespoon or so of water pools inside after a heavy rain, which was a concern I had when I bought it. I don't want to give mosquitoes a place to lay their eggs, so Dragon Boy has proven to be well worth the investment, and he gets along surprisingly well with our large gecko population.
A lot. Anyone thinking about buying him, however, should be aware of his limitations. My downspout was the right size to fit into Roland's back in my case; Roland, on the other hand, couldn't get under the downspout because it was too close to the concrete porch. I was so taken with Roland that I resolved to find a way to make him work for me. I ended up having to buy a bunch of downspout extenders and connect them all together to get the water to a safe place where I could see Roland. Because most extenders are too large to fit into Roland's back opening, I had to buy a variety of sizes. I also had to fiddle with the grade to ensure that water flowed freely from my downspout to Roland through the extenders (rather than pooling somewhere in the extenders). To get everything just right, it took a lot of figuring out and hard work. The end result is satisfactory. From my living room window, I can see Roland dumping water, and several visitors have remarked on how adorable Roland is. So, if you're looking for a unique way to dress up your downspout, I strongly suggest Roland. However, you should be aware that getting him to work properly may necessitate multiple adjustments.
The gargoyles on Notre Dame Cathedral were clearly an inspiration for this gargoyle. By cutting off the back just behind the wings and securing a pipe collar inline with the mouth, I was able to cover the outlet pipe from a sump. The gargoyle is hollow and has a shell that varies in thickness, but this should never be an issue when used on a rain gutter as intended. When I learned that Notre Dame was on fire, I was in the middle of installing this gargoyle. What do you think the chances are of that happening?.

This is what I used in my pond as a waterfall. My pond pump (PP80016: PP80016: PP80016: PP80016: PP80016: PP Water tubing located under the slab of rock to push water through the Gargoyle rain guard and an 800 GPH submersible high lift pond pump from PonicsFarm. I moved some of the rocks so you can see how I attached a cork in the back with a hole to put the tubing through.
After purchasing the Roland the Gargoyle from a different source a few years ago, I decided to purchase the Toscano Darian the Dragon. Darian is roughly two-thirds the size of Roland, so we had to compress the existing fitting to fit it into his butt. We had to work together to finish it, but we did it. He is a welcome addition to our down spout because he stays put. The opening for Roland makes it much easier to insert the down spout. It's great to have the pair, and the difference isn't noticeable because they aren't next to each other.
I had my landscaping redone recently and thought these would be a cute addition to the yard, so I purchased two. I should've read up on them more thoroughly. They can't be left out in the cold. Another thing I noticed after using them for a while is that they are water resistant. I didn't realize it until my dog knocked one over and I felt and heard water sloshing around inside when I picked it up. I looked at it closely and couldn't figure out how water got inside. Somewhere, there has to be a small hole. The issue is that it never truly emerges. I kept turning it over, and some water came out, but there was still a lot inside. As a result, it would most likely freeze and break during the winter.
