My father lived out of state during the holidays, so I bought him this as a gift. Since I don't own one, I don't have a pet. Since you are trying to attract mason bees, I would guess that you would want to keep the exterior as chemical-free as possible. There will be a strong preference for a natural habitat for them.
The one I have in my balcony garden dates back to As far as we know, no bugs have moved in. There are multiple times that I released Lacewings and ladybugs around the area.
There is no way to remove it. I also found many spider eggs inside my web.

Despite two releases of 3000 lady bugs, a release of 10000 lace wings, as well as the release of about 200 baby praying mantises all near and around it, it still sits in my garden. As of this writing, nothing has moved into the building. Although kind of cool conceptually, it is useless in the end. In addition, it came with spider eggs inside of it that had to be cleaned out with difficulty because there was no opening for you to get.
None of them took hold. Instead of laying on our grape leaves, they prefer to sit on the ground. Put bugs on it and hang it under the vines and leaves. There are more fun to be had under the leaves if they can climb off. I like how it's so cute and doesn't seem out of place Ladybugs don't seem to mind that the ladybugs were made.
However, I haven't seen any other insects going into it, so it's possible they could go in there as well. It sits at the corner of my house almost 4 feet above the ground, at gate height so you can see it on the ground. There it is right by my butterfly bush, so it seems to attract the insects there, which is why If you plan to put it in a very sunny spot, please make sure it gets enough sun so the metal on top will heat.
Considering it is still a little too early for insects to nest inside the house for winter, I am not sure if they will actually nest here. However, the house looks quite cozy and sturdy. In the event that it was hung from a hook, it would slide forward, but since it is hung against my fence, it lays It is possible that you would need to add a hanger and center it over the middle of the house if you want it hung from a hook.
There were ladybugs and a praying mantis in my garden, though. There are no bugs in the house. It was so bad that I sprayed nectar water around the area and put food out as well.
Remember that you will need to hang this against a tree or In the photo, you can see the hanger is at the back of the bee house, so if it's not flush against something sturdy like a post or tree, it might tilt forward. It was returned to the seller.
It's too much of a good thing to have this pollinator house. Hanging it from anything other than a very stout tree limb would be too challenging because it is simply too large and too heavy. awkward. The hanger attachment is at the rear of the roof peak, so it leans forward when it's attached to the roof. It should have two attachment points to keep it in a reasonable position. The lightweight bamboo structures will be returned and I will go back to them.
It is great for the bees. They have not noticed it yet, but they will eventually remember it. It will be necessary to remove the screens in order to do this. Although they can't be removed, I shouldn't have any problems since I removed them on my other house about 2 years ago without incident. Bees seem to love me, so I love watching them. It should seem like the bees will enjoy the large gardens in which I have placed them.
