Product Description

In place of a traditional lawn, Creeping Thyme provides a wonderful ground cover that can tolerate light foot traffic. In addition to replacing standard thyme, it's also a good odor-control ingredient
The kind of scent produced by Creeping Thyme varies from herbal to lemon when it is walked on
Your lawn will be adorned with butterflies
Increases from 3 to 4 This plant grows to 8" in height and has small lavender blooms
The seeds in this package are extremely small, containing nearly 3 million seeds per pound. They provide impressive coverage if used sparingly, and allow for ease of planting if they have been lightly sprinked. Group seeds of about 5 together, and lightly press them into the surface of the soil (do not cover with soil). Once the soil temperature reaches 70 degrees and the threat of frost has passed, plant them 12" apart. The soil must be kept lightly moist until seed germination can occur, which may take up to four Dry soil can cause seed to fail to germinate, so make sure you give your seeds the attention they need

Questions & Answers

Is it possible to grow it in zone 7 in Atlanta, Ga?

I live at a high altitude in Colorado and my garden loves the winter, so it can rest from summer's heat. It all comes back in the spring twice as thick and happy, growing flowers that monarch butterflies and honey bees really appreciate. We hope you enjoy it! I also love the way it smells.

What is the growth potential of this ?

Despite living in Maryland, I did not grow my own

Ideally, I'll plant this on a bank with a southerly exposure. Is that going to crowd out the grass or do I have to remove it?

It did not take long for the seeds to grow after I removed the sod and laid the good soil. Grass grows thick there, and I'm not sure if they can grow there.

Couldn't you simply plant this in the ground straight away? Would you be able to cover 1/4 acre of ground for me?

While you can do it, germinating the seeds might be difficult since you will need to keep the ground moist to grow them. As soon as they are established, they are very tolerant of heat and draught. It is also possible for weeds to grow over the seeds and cover As soon as thyme takes hold it will prevent weeds from growing, but until that time it will be difficult to keep the weeds out. As I mentioned before, I had a fair amount of success when I spread the seeds across the flowerbed and watered, but I had better luck starting the seeds in peat pellets under a grow light in the spring and transplanting them to the flower bed.

It has succeeded in germinating
5/5

I was happy to see that I had a very high success rate for germinating thyme seeds after reading how difficult it can be. Planting the seeds indoors in small seedling trays was my method of starting them. So far, every single one of the 50 cells I planted has germinated several My method for planting the nearly microscopic seeds was to spread the seeds in a single layer on top of the jar lid and dab at them with a wet (but not wet) fingertip to help them adhere. In the seed tray, I pushed my finger lightly into the soil and then took out about 5 seeds at a time. It is impossible to tell if all the seeds have been transferred since your finger is now covered in dirt, but that is why I tried 5 seeds at a time. Even so, the two cells that didn't germinate quite possibly did not transfer seeds. I found this to be an exceptionally easy method for controlling the planting of these small seeds with good precision, and I certainly had success with it. In order to keep the top layer of the soil moist at all times, I misted the newly planted seeds at least once per day using a spray bottle. As soon as I placed the seeds in the peat tray, I made sure the soil was thoroughly moist. In less than a week, most of my 50 cells showed green sprouts, and within two weeks, nearly all did as well. In about 3 weeks, plants are only about 1/4" tall, so the growth is still very slow. Temperatures have been cool and they have probably slowed down because of it. Within the next week or two, I will transplant the seedlings into cracks in a garden path. It looks like we are off to a great.

This is a good viability

We planted the seeds in a plastic bag with a wet paper towel before they were ready to plant. It didn't take long for the seeds to sprout! We will be purchasing.

A high success rate of germination
5/5

Although I estimated it would take 3 weeks for the seeds to germinate, I only had sprouts in 5 days instead. 2 weeks after germination, it looks as though there was near 100% germination.

You are a success! The plants were kept in my indoor grow tent under a led light as per the directions
5/5

During the day, it was quite a bit warmer than expected with temperatures in the 80s. Three days after the seeds were planted, they started growing. It is difficult to count and plant the seeds since they are about the size of black pepper. Rather than burying the seeds, I lightly pressed each one onto the top of the soil but did not cover them completely. A thin layer of water was added to the bottom of the seed starter, to prevent the seeds from washing away. The lights were on like normal when I germinated the seeds, but I am not sure whether they need sunlight. They are growing well, and I am glad that they did. I could pay for the indoor garden setup with the savings I get from growing a few flats of Creeping Thyme.

How could I possibly be doing something It's been over half a century since I began working as a gardener

a 14 on my report card. We have a 5-acre orchard. I have a YouTube channel called Peggy Helbling's Garden What You've Got, in which I write about how easy it is to garden. of that said, I planted these seeds in varying soil types, including potting soil, sand with feeding worm castings, and soil with vermiculite. I kept all of them moist for 3 days, and there were hairs coming out of them. The process of germination is similar. I removed the cover, and as soon as I did, they fell The pots are all full! As far as I know, I have never encountered such a situation. Even poor soil and poor conditions should allow thyme to grow. Having tried three pots so far, all of them behaved the same way. Thank you for letting me know if I made a mistake. As much as I wanted a red, fragrant ground cover, I did not get it. The Garden of Peggy Helblings What You Have to Offer.

This is excellent! A second and final update is now available

I'm amazed at how fast they've grown! Seeing how they are becoming dense green tufts is so cute! Considering how expensive ground cover can be, this is really remarkable! We live in zone 7b and it has been difficult to get any ground cover to grow! I'm elated to see this! Thanks for this purchase! I am very pleased with it! The following is a

*Update. My plants were planted outside a few weeks ago. I will try to update again in the near future. In reality, I have been very successful with the seeds and have only used about half of the bag. to grow more plants It took a couple of months for the seeds to germinate, but now they have begun to grow and creep. For the last couple of weeks, I've been hardening them so they will be ready for planting outside within two weeks or so. My choice was to use those little soil pods as well as soil in plastic trays and natural Plants have done best in these pods for some reason, although we do not know why, but it has been a good experiment. The sort of vegetables I'm growing right now is so many that I decided to use plastic tote bottoms and lids as trays. As a result of the deep clear part of the tote, the pods have done better than those on the lid. Unfortunately, I am unsure of what to do- This made me think I'd share it with you. Despite my cautious optimism, I am confident they will prove to be fruitful and become excellent ground cover after a couple of months of care and attention. Let's hope for the best! This is the perfect time to buy I bought another package and am going to try directly sowing outdoors after having some success with the first one. As for how that goes, we'll see. We wish you good growth!.
