I'm curious as to what kind of wood this is. ?

I'm not sure what kind of wood it is, but it's thick and sturdy - It can comfortably seat an adult. I've had it for two years and have never had any issues with it. It is something I strongly suggest.

Is there a limit to how much weight it can support?

If you need a seat, this is definitely a good option. It was for this reason that I purchased a cushion. The side table is also strong enough to serve as a stool. I'd say 150 pounds is a good guess.
