On my 15, it was successful. I took a 5 hp Kohler engine from an old craftsman and installed it on a newer troybilt; the starter is a little longer than the original, but it will fit.
Put this on my 16 hp Kohler engine and it spins the motor with ease.

On a Kohler Engine 15, I installed this. 5 horsepower it was a little longer than the original starter but it bolted right on up I just had to raise the cover a little bit to get it in once I bolted it up put the cover back on and it was perfect and fired right up it started better than it had for years this was a 1996 engine starter on it last a long time I could have gotten one from the Kohler dealership but they wanted $235 for it and I got it here for $60 so it was a big jump I could have.
It was a kohler 17, and the motor was simple to replace and work perfectly. 5 HP. They obviously used this motor on a lot of small engines, so take a look at the picture and see if it fits your style. If it does not, do not purchase it.
This was purchased for my John Deere L110 with the 17 horsepower engine. This starter motor was a direct replacement for the Johnson 1209822 starter motor, which retails for more than $100. It only took a few minutes to set up. It always starts right up; it's a great deal.
To be honest, I'm not sure if it'll work once it's installed. Still no better, and the condition appears to be such that a replacement is required. Maybe it's the wiring, but the new one won't turn on even if the power is turned on directly?.
It's incredibly simple to set up and use, and it performs admirably. so far. The item is well-made and reasonably priced. It came with documentation demonstrating how the starter performed under load. Update: It's been 6 months and it's still going strong.
This is where 098 begins, and what a difference it makes. This lawn tractor starter is the quietest I've ever heard. I'm hoping it lasts.
I was apprehensive about my husband purchasing a starter online, but I was pleasantly surprised when he received it and installed it. It went off without a hitch. It performs as expected, and we were able to save some cash as a result.
The starter dive gear was larger than the original, but the mounting housing kept it off the engine long enough for the drive gear to work. It spins faster than the original and starts the mower faster.
