A ruler and a measuring tape measured 4 1/4" doubled from the knot to the tip of the tag when I had it laid out. How large the neck was would determine how large the collar would be. This might be of some help!
The string is not necessary unless you do not use it. Paper tag which is already attached to string has a hole cut out of it.

The strung marking tags from Avery are some of the products I enjoy. In recent years, I have purchased several boxes of these, primarily for the yearly sales in our community. Each church gathers up its fine treasures and auctions them off in order to raise money for charity. It's a bit larger than most tags, but is a good fit for larger items that may need a bit more There are certainly sufficient dimensions for you to write something on them. In this case, we would be able to add an explanation and price to our claim, along with the item's name. As far as I know, Avery also has smaller tags, which I will also add to my wish list. These tags are primarily for listing prices, but otherwise contain little information. As you can see, these tags stand out quite nicely and are quite visible. A few sales will be enough to maintain the durability of the stock. There are decent quality strings, and there is a far enough distance from the hole for them not to tear easily. You get what you pay for, even if there are cheaper tags. When purchasing in bulk, especially when using them for business purposes or for frequent sales, it is definitely more economical. You can just ignore the individual with a few tags who is only interested in the nametag. These are worth buying for those who use them frequently.
This type of small tag is absolutely adorable. The little guys are hundreds of them now, and I can use them a lot. I'm probably going to be doing this for the rest of my life I am even considering leaving some of these items to my kids as part of (You always receive lots of stuff! * )
