Replacement ink cartridges are available from Kuretake. Unscrew the pen's body (longer part) from the tip (black grip and brush--the part that goes into the cap). Empty the cartridge and discard it. Take the new cartridge and insert it into the brush with the metal ball facing down. When the cartridge is in place, it will click and you will feel it. Reassemble the pen using the screws provided. If you haven't used it in a while, the ink may take a while to fade. If you suspect dried ink is obstructing the flow, run the brush tip under water. br>Kuretake's cartridges are used in almost all of their pens. Refills are available online, but they will not fit this pen because they are made by Pentel.
I use high-quality China ink to refill them, and they work perfectly!
I started drawing after taking off the cap that covered the brush. The ink flow was smooth and automatic, and the result was stunning. I've had no issues so far.
Kuretake No. 1 is a type of Kuretake. According to what I've been told, the 8 fountain brush tip is replaceable. To keep the tip moist, use the brush on a regular basis; however, if it becomes dry, remove the cartridge and soak the tip in a little water before drying it. If you resembling it, the ink should start flowing again.

Put the felt tip brush pen down and concentrate. I made the decision to learn brush lettering for myself. Before ordering this pen, I read on 5,000 different websites that Tombow pens were "so amazing everyone uses them. " However, there were numerous warnings for them as well. The tips of the fingers flex. The tips are fraying. There's a lot to say about the advice. And then it dawned on me why THIS pen was so special. It has a brush tip that is ACTUAL. I was able to use a wider range of papers, achieve a wider range of stroke weights with a single pen, and replace the cartridge when it ran out. I practiced letters for hundreds of pages, and the pen is still in excellent condition, and I'm only on my second cartridge. Yes, there are rainbow colors available for the tombow pens. But only for the purpose of education. That's a pretty steep price, considering that if one pen runs out, you'd have to replace the entire set just to get that one color back. Maybe if I started a lettering side business, they'd be more reasonable. But, let's be honest, fat Crayola markers can do rainbow "brush" lettering. I can't recommend this pen highly enough for practice or for black-on-black work. As a matter of fact I'm a complete supply snob when it comes to art supplies. I'm not recommending it as a low-cost alternative; rather, I'm recommending it because the quality far outweighs the price, and the pen's utility is above average. You'll understand what I mean when you see what I'm talking about. And, no, I was not compensated for my review in any way. It's just a fantastic pen in general.
Brush pen that is both good and affordable. The barrel is a little long, but it should fit in most pen/pencil cases just fine. br>In comparison to other brush pens I've used, line control is very easy with this pen. For those who want or need waterproof ink, it works with Platinum Carbon ink cartridges.
When I use this pen, I make far fewer errors. I'll have to get a couple more of these. br>br>If you're not used to using large brushes and have small handwriting, this is a great option for you. br>br>*I forgot to mention this in my initial review, but there is a small ball blocking the passage when inserting the ink cartridge for the first time; fit the cartridge to where it needs to be, gently pushing until it stops. THEN SLAP THE SUCKER UNTIL YOU HEAR THE BALL PUSH OUT OF PLACE AND IT ALMOST CLICKS IN PLACE. You'll have ink all over the place if you wait until it stops "sinking" into the pen. br>br>I absolutely adore this pen and plan to purchase more. It's something I'm going to do. *editbr>br>br>br>br>br>br>br>br>br>br>br>br>br>br>br>br>br br>An empty ink cartridge. br>and any of your favorite calligraphy inks. br>Hobbico 12cc Curved Tip Hobby Syringebr> I'm going to use Yi de ge because I have it. but i'm sure any will sufficebr>br>fill the syringe to the desired level and insert it into the empty cartridge, then press the plunger to fill. The upside to this is that you get as many refills as you have a bottle of ink when you use it for the first time. br>The downside to this is that you get as many refills as you have a bottle of ink when you use it for the first time. br>On the downside, if the pen isn't used frequently enough, the ink can coagulate. (I had an old bottle that I hadn't used in a long time, and the ink had coagulated), so give the pen a good shake every now and then. If you need a backup, buy another one of these with the proper refills when you have the money, and use the one with the "different ink" as a backup. I had a feeling this could be done for a while, but it took me until the sixth time I had the pen to get an empty one. I'm glad I did because it means I won't have to worry about not having a good pen in the future. br>br>MAKE SURE TO PUSH THE INK CARTRIDGE ALL THE WAY IN UNTIL IT CAN'T BE PUSHED ANY FURTHER, OR THE INK WILL GO EVERYWHERE. br>br>**edit number 2: the refill method is due on December 15th. It's possible that you'll want to dilute it. When you don't use yi de ge ink on a regular basis, it becomes sticky; watering it down before using it to refill the cartridge will make the ink flow more smoothly. Though I'm not sure of the ratio right now, I'll update when I drain it a second time. br>br>Update January 4, 2017: br>Water and yidege black ink are used in a 50/50 ratio. br>br>As previously stated, more ink will become sticky with use, whereas less ink will result in watered down ink and thus less saturation. If you have more than one pen, I strongly advise you to use this method. Make a note of one for (manual) refills and the other for ink cartridge purchases. br>br>This is ideal for someone on a tight budget who wants to create art. I've already placed another order for two more, one for the included ink and the other as a backup. THIS IS AN EXCELLENT DEAL ONCE AGAIN.
I have a few brush pens, but I keep coming back to this one because it is the cheapest. It fits my hand perfectly, it's light, you can refill the ink cartridges with other inks yourself (just use a syringe to refill after washing the cartridge), and the tip is neither too soft nor too hard, and I'm not afraid of losing it when sketching outdoors because of the low price. The length, which is longer than a standard pen and thus does not fit in most standard pen cases or sticks out on my sketching bag, is perhaps the only disadvantage (at least for me). However, I "improved" mine by removing an inch from the back, lol! After cutting a piece off, I didn't notice any difference in the balance of the pen. I usually bring two of these with me, one with black ink and the other with gray ink, because it's a quick way to add shade and shadow to urban sketches. If you want to go monochrome, you can make multiple shades and fill different pens with each one. You can fill this pen without a syringe by purchasing a converter, but the converter will be more expensive than the pen! I chose to use the included cartridges, though I did empty them and refill with waterproof ink. The ink that comes with the pen is fine, but it isn't waterproof, which is important for my purposes because I usually watercolor my sketches. You can use the water based ink that comes with the pen (and other water based inks) to create interesting effects by sketching and then "smearing" the dark portions of the sketch with a water brush pen or a wet paint brush to create your shades and shadows. So, before you empty the cartridge to replace the ink, you might want to have some fun with the ink included! There's a lot of sketching to be done, but there's never enough time, lol!.
