9 7/8" is my measurement. I had a low-clearance drawer, so instead of putting these inside the hanging files, I just put them in the drawer. They were still visible in between the hanging file folders because they were still high enough.
I find that they hold up well because they are thicker than standard pressboard.
The letters are only on one side, but my file guides go from left to right, which is odd. I've seen them both ways, but there's no way to choose which way to go; you simply have to choose the correct ones. I've also seen pendaflex legal size file guides, but not in poly.

I bought two sets of these File Guides two days apart, and the second set came with two "S" File Guides instead of an XYZ File Guide. Amazon is willing to replace the defective File Guides, but Amazon wants to charge me for return shipping on the defective set, even though the defective set is not my fault, so I'm stuck with the defective File Guides. What makes you think that's reasonable? Bummer.
I really like this product because it helps me organize my small desk space. I use it in conjunction with a simple mesh or plastic bin that can hold letter-size paper. This is also something I use at work. It is strongly advised.
This item is extremely durable. Last indefinitely. Never wear out, bend, fold, fade, wrinkle, or tear, and never show signs of wear. The R sheet was missing, which was the only flaw with these. There's no way! Hmmm? Someone must have gotten a set with two Rs!.
This item was purchased to replace some sturdy paper file folder dividers that had been worn out along the top where the alphabetic letter tab is located. I was looking for a long-lasting plastic product but couldn't find any in my area. All that is required is a trip to Amazon. com and presto, you've got yourself a brand new website! Everything is available to them. Amazon is to be commended.
The vibrant colors are also a lot of fun!.

This item is of excellent quality. I liked that I could get rid of my flimsy cardboard dividers and replace them with a product that was bright and eye-catching, as well as capable of keeping my large files sorted in their proper order.
