You can definitely use it to hold the textbook, but depending on the type of surface that you place it on, it may or may not slide. My organizer is used for storing recipes in the kitchen. Although it isn't cheap, it's worth it. It's probably best to place it in front of something solid so it doesn't slide and then it would be good.

It's convenient for putting big books on it because you can put them on it easily. Since the base fits nicely between my legs, I also use it on my lap when I lay in bed or on the couch. My only complaint is that it does pop right out of the groove once it gets hot, but I just put a small piece of foam in there and it stays in place.
