That would seem to be the case. It is possible to remove the 3 ring binder insert and expand the pocket on the left.
It has a pocket on the right hand side. That is where the removable 3-in-1 adapters are. This is the location of the ring binder. It is then possible to place paperwork there once that is removed. Some of my resumes are there right now.
Neither the flap nor the opposite side of the portfolio has creased or damaged my papers. The only thing I've noticed is that when you insert the left side of the portfolio, you must tuck it in completely in order to prevent the document from being bent when the portfolio is closed.

The one I have fits into had been looking for a padfolio that could accommodate dividers when closed, and I own a Samsonite one, but it sticks out when closed. Additionally, this one has an added width that allows the items to fit neatly inside the case due to the longer zipper length. For people who cannot place files in this, I think you have defective units as the deep pocket looks fine, and the second pocket is tight, but it doesn't fit nearly as tightly as the deep pocket. The three-ring binder can be retrieved out of the padfolio and it can be closed, so I do not have to worry about the opened padfolio eating up all the space. I can then keep the notes I want, add notes from elsewhere, and cut out the ones I don't want to keep. There is a flimsy backing attached to the binder. It may not be as stiff as I'd like, but that's okay. It would be easy to put a tablet in the larger pocket opening, but there is a folder in there instead. A couple of sheets of paper can fit inside the smaller one, but not much more than that. It has a large elastic pocket near the bottom that is great for holding things like USB As I mentioned before, I didn't think the handle would be useful, but with very full hands, you can grab the padfolio by the handle with one or two fingers.
