Cup magnets have a magnetic field that is directed in one direction. It's perfectly safe to put this in the same bag as your laptop if the magnets are facing away from it. It's the same as if your laptop is on it while you're using it.
MagBench is available in two different models. The work surface of the MagBench Standard is flat and measures 12" x 12".
Really, any size will suffice. It will fit a laptop of any size, large or small. It works perfectly!

I've gotten a lot of "Where did you get that?" comments, and I really like how well it works. It serves as a lap desk for me. Because I work in building automation and controls, the top desk is ideal for attaching to a panel and setting up. The only improvement I would ask for right now is if there was a way to incorporate a 'cord keeper' that would allow me to hang my power cord from. The price is a little high, but the product is of good quality and durable, and the magnets allow it to be attached to ductwork or air handling units.
It's very simple to attach to magnetic surfaces, and I have no concerns about it failing. You'll see why once you've placed it on the ground. When the stronger magnets (at the bottom) latch onto the surface for the first time, it may startle you. POW! And it is for this reason alone that I have given it a four-star rating. It's a pain to get it off the surface. I usually steer clear of attempting it. I place it near the edge of where I'm mounting it so that I can easily slide it off (at least 1 or 2 magnets), and then it's a simple pull.
When working on a/c equipment, this is a great place to put your laptop and tools. Trying to balance a laptop or find a flat and suitable location to set one can be difficult. It's also much less likely that your laptop will be dropped.
This is an excellent purchase. I work in the building automation industry and visit several new construction sites on a regular basis. For someone like me, this is a fantastic tool to have.
