Because bookshelves cannot fire a weapon, you should not be concerned if one appears armed. Because the package is large (6' long 3' wide 1' thick) and weighs about 50 pounds, you should be concerned about it crushing you. You will not, however, be shot.
The Sauder 5-drawer bookcase has adjustable shelves. Each shelf on the shelf bookcase can hold up to 30 pounds. The fixed center shelf can hold up to 40 pounds, while the bottom shelf can hold up to 50 pounds.
Mine is still going strong after a cross-country move, and it's full of soft and hardcover books with no sagging shelves. The bookcase is made entirely of composite wood, with a cardboard back, but it is extremely durable.
The Sauder 420173 5-Drawer Bookcase has adjustable shelves. Each shelf bookcase can only hold 30 pounds. Up to 40 pounds can be supported by the fixed shelf in the center.

It was disappointing. The finish is attractive and blends well with our other woodwork. All of the components were present and in good condition when it arrived in decent packaging. However, after putting together the shelves and placing hardback books on them, I discovered that a solid row of books causes the shelf to bow! I wasn't expecting this level of quality, but I suppose that's what you get for the price. Between the shelves, I intend to place support dividers. What a hassle.
Every component was perfectly in place. For my dining room, I purchased two units. To the back of each shelf, I added 1x2 wood braces. Metal L brackets were added to units in the corners, which were hidden behind the front trim. Using a right angle square to keep everything straight while assembling is a good idea. After both units were completed, they were placed next to each other and the front trim was aligned. Clamps were used in front to hold them together. Pilot holes were drilled one inch behind the front trim at the top, middle, and bottom, so they were not visible. To join the units, use a 1 1/4" screw with a washer. It looks great when it's done. $300 for the entire package, including all additional support materials. Wow. ( FYI. Here's how to add braces quickly. Use 3/4-inch-thick poplar or oak 1x2 lumber. Cut to the same length as the braces that come with each shelf and slide on. Drill a hole in the center and one 4" on each side 1 3/8" from the back of each shelf, using a drill bit the same size as your wood screws and counter sinking holes from the top of the shelf. To match the bookcase, use a screw that is 1 1/4" long and has a phillips head. When finished, the shelf will be free of screw heads. Turn the shelf over and place the wood brace on the edge 3/4" from the edge, center side to side, and 1" from the back of the shelf. This will place it in the middle of the holes you've drilled. On both ends of the brace, use a clamp. With the brace clamped in place, flip the shelf over. Drill down from the top through countersunk holes in support boards with a drill bit half the thickness of screws. You only need to drill 1/4" into the brace to get the screw started. Take a grey deck screw and drill three holes down from the top of the shelf into the brace. Take the clamp off. Brace can pull up tight on its own because the hole in the shelf is the same size as the screw. When putting a brace on the very top of the unit, cut the brace board to the full width of the inside measurement, as that brace will be visible and will give the unit a finished look. I chose an oak board for that one brace and sorted through all of them until I found one that was grey rather than red. I hope this information is useful to those interested in purchasing a heavy-duty unit. The bookcase is leaning against the wall nicely. I found wall studs, added a through brace under the bottom section, and screwed the units to the wall. It appears to be built-in.
1
It has a large capacity and can accommodate a variety of items.
2. According to the instruction booklet, it can hold up to 180 pounds of items.
3. Once it's put together, it's incredibly sturdy. br>br>CONS (1 star): br>br>
1. Putting it together is a pain. One of the parts (the letter "K" from the END MOLDING) refused to stay connected. Fortunately, it was purely decorative and did not support the shelf. So I rigged it the other way, and it works perfectly. br>2. To put it together, you'll need a fair amount of space. When putting it together, make sure you have plenty of space. As a result, you'll most likely require 12 to 15 minutes. Work space of 15 feet. FINAL WORDS (3 STARS): br>br> This is an excellent shelf for decluttering any room. Others would benefit from the product, and I would recommend it to them. You'll be fine if you just keep an eye out for the END MOLDING parts.
Two of them arrived promptly and in excellent condition. The other arrived in a dented, broken box with footprints on the floorboards. The reason for this was because of UPS delivery. I immediately contacted Amazon, who is sending out a replacement unit as well as paying for the damaged unit's return shipping. br>br>As for the shelves, I think they're fantastic. It took some time to put both shelves together, but I was able to do so in one afternoon. The instructions were straightforward and simple to follow. The shelves look great once they're put together and are quite sturdy. br>br> I can't wait to finish the third one and put it up on the wall.
My bookcase has only been full for a month, and the shelves are beginning to sag. On each shelf, there are a few hardcover and paperback books with little weight. This should not happen for the price, and if it does, it should not happen after only a month of ownership! Very dissatisfied.
There are two sections to the bookcase: an upper section with three shelving areas and a lower section with two shelving areas. If the top of the bookcase is not screwed to a wall for support, the bookcase will not stand on its own without the top and bottom shelves wobbling. After putting it together and seeing how wobbly it was, I decided not to put any books on it because it would have fallen over. I simply returned it in its original packaging. Despite the fact that the photo makes it appear that the sideboards are (2") thick, they are actually quite thin (5/8"). The thin boards are hidden behind a 2" slide-over front. It has a low-cost appearance, is constructed of low-cost materials (particle board sides and shelves with MDF slide-over coverings), and is overpriced for what you get.
For the price, this is an excellent bookcase that matches my 'grey wood' office furniture and holds a large number of books. I am extremely happy!.
PROs: This bookcase is both durable and attractive. The product's quality is higher than I had anticipated. There are no parts that are damaged. CONS: br>br> It wasn't particularly simple to set up, but neither was it particularly difficult. There were no labels on some parts, or the labels were difficult to read. If you buy this, you'll be hammering nails into the back board (which I enjoy doing), but everything is included except the hammer and screwdriver, of course. Look at the pictures to see how one of the wood parts is missing some length. Although I had expected the shelves to be 1 1/2 inches thick, they are still quite sturdy. br>br>In case you didn't know, Except for the front base and base, each wood part is about 1/2 to 3/4 inch thick. Keep in mind to adhere to the manual's instructions.
