It appears to be made of microfibers. It's almost felt-like, but not quite, and looks like a microfiber fabric you'd find on an armchair. They do contribute to sound absorption in general.

Because my desk's beefed-up side supports required a little more clearance, I had to trim the pads that secure it from the bottom (it would have fit perfectly on the back). I'm not going to deduct any stars because I didn't do it ahead of time. The desk should be measured. Apart from that, all of the components were of good quality, and the finished product looks fantastic.

It's not a particularly noticeable effect, but if you have speakers pointed in one direction, it'll suffice to muffle the sound slightly.
