It works, but it's not great. It was more of a shambles than I had anticipated. Because of the way you hold it, the top coat leaks onto your fingers after only two cabinets, making it sticky. I was always rinsing it and starting over. It also had a streaky finish, regardless of how thin or many coats were applied. I ended up using it for the cabinet inlays and a 2 inch foam roller for the rest, which worked out much better. For the inlay, however, a small foam brush worked just as well. This sponge did not impress me in any way.
The first use of this product resulted in small blue sponge specks. I had better luck with a dollar store sponge than with this product, so save your money and don't buy it. Shameful.
I bought this sponge and the 16oz Gatorhide and have only recently put it to use because I've been painting furniture with Annie Sloan paint and needed a more durable finish than wax for one of my projects. Because I began refinishing a dining table and chairs, that project has been put on hold. The table's chairs and legs were painted with AS paint, and the top was stained with Minwax penetrating stain. I've never been good at applying polyurethane or polycrylic, so sealing the table top was not something I was looking forward to. This sponge, in combination with the Gatorhide, is a game-changer. This is the first coat, and it isn't even dry yet, but it already looks like a factory finish. I'm completely taken aback. And now I'm a convert: instead of waxing the chairs, I'm going to use this on the paint. I'm going to try Dixie Belle paint next because I really like it.
This sponge is so simple to use that the product appears to be floating on the surface. When you use it, you'll use it less. It's also of good quality; after a few uses, it's still in excellent condition.
It's a breeze to apply the top coat! I would strongly suggest it.
