Is this contact adhesive? I'd like to use it to spray one side of a plastic work mat, then the other side of a wood surface. They stick after they've dried, right?

It's similar to contact adhesive, but it sprays a string-like pattern. It should work fine for your needs.

Is it possible to use this product to join two pieces of aluminum?

Yes, as long as it's sprayed on both sides of the surface that needs adhesion and allowed to dry until tacky. Then, using a glue stick, adhere the two halves together. However, due to the fact that the bond is instantaneous and fairly permanent, extreme caution is advised.
