Questions & Answers

When you remove the batteries, do the time and settings reset?

The time and date must be reset if the batteries are removed for a long period of time.

Is it possible to block out outside noise and the environment around it, such as in a kitchen where people are conversing?

You'll need an external dynamic microphone to plug into the recorder for this. The mics that are attached are sensitive condenser mics.

Why are so many of the questions/reviews from years ago, if this is the 2020 model?

This was purchased in the year 2021. The unit I received was identical to the one shown on the Zoomcorp website, with the exception that the mic holder isn't black like it is on Amazon. Instead, it's finished in white chrome. So, if you're looking for all-black, you've come to the right place. It isn't completely black, but it isn't completely white either.

Is it possible to record with just one XLR microphone? Remove yourself from the situation
3/5

Using just one XLR mic for recording? Here are the choices you have:br>1. While visualizing your levels, record only in the left or right channels. br>2. While visualizing your levels and picking up passive white noise from an empty XLR slot, record in the center channel.
3. Without seeing your levels, record the center channel. br>br>I assume that shorting the second XLR slot will eliminate the white noise, but it's probably a better bet to invest in a better device, which can record large sections of audio and multiple devices simultaneously. It's essentially for musicians or people who walk around in public with the intention of recording the audio of everything they see. br>br>If you own the Zoom H1N and enjoy its user-friendly interface, you'll be disappointed, or at least I was, for the following reasons.
1. The H1N detects a USB connection automatically and prompts you to use the device as a USB storage device to migrate files. To use the H4N, go to the menu and scroll through until you find the USB option, then select USB storage.
2. You are unable to adjust your levels prior to recording. You can technically do so, but you'll need to press record and then pause the recording.
3. Because this device has a lot more features than the h1n, you'll want to read the manual. The manual, on the other hand, is of no assistance. Someone went to the trouble of felling a tree just to print a manual that says "turn off 1/2 mix to turn off 1/2 mix" but doesn't go into detail about any of the features. It simply describes where to look for them and how to turn them on and off. "Press gas to go," as if the H4N were a race car, would be written in the instruction manual. It would also skip over explaining all of the dash's fancy dials. br>br>I returned it and replaced it with a Tascam DR- The Zoom H4N is replaced by the 60DMKII, which is easier to use and better suited to my needs.

Go for something else if you're a pro
3/5

The operating system is a disaster. To the moon and back with jet lag. It did not come with a USB cable! The sensation is that of a plastic toy. My Shure sm58 is a lot heavier than yours! It has a good sound quality.

This is a fantastic piece of equipment
5/5

These are the units that we use in science. The H4n Pro's sensitivity is extremely consistent, despite the fact that it is not scientifically calibrated. The recording capabilities are quite impressive; however, if this is updated, they should ditch the clunky LCD control interface in favor of a phone app that connects via Bluetooth. Although the user interface is a little clumsy, we don't need to delve into the menus every day. It is relatively simple to operate a unit once it has been configured.

Every time I turn it on, it almost immediately freezes
3/5

The Zoom recorder is an excellent tool for recording sound "on the fly. " However, it almost always freezes after about 2 minutes when I start it up. Until now, the only way to fix it has been to remove the batteries. This is something I have to do several times at times. It's a real drag. But once you get past that, it's fantastic.

Happy
5/5

It does what it says. Mics are excellent. I'm using this device with the Rode M5-S in addition to the onboard mics. Rode SB20 stereo bar with a pair of MP matched condenser mics. This is a fantastic match. One disadvantage is the short battery life of the AA batteries; I have not tried the "stamina" mode. Instead, I went out and bought a Zoom AC adapter. I purchased a USB-powered device for complete portability. I needed a 1mm cable to connect to a USB battery bank so I could power this device. The user guide is excellent. The second flaw is that the center of mass isn't exactly in the middle. The onboard microphones are attached to a solid metal block that has been machined to perfection. When it comes to dealing with noise, I suppose mass is your friend. However, this makes the unit very heavy in the direction of the microphones and makes it difficult to hold. Overall: br>br> It is highly recommended.

Files are unable to be transferred to a Windows 10 computer
3/5

I have two brand new Windows 10 PCs at home, but neither of them detects the H4N Pro Black when plugged into the mini-USB port. Due to the lack of a USB port, I am unable to transfer my recordings to my computer without purchasing an external SD Card Reader. So, after spending this much money on this unit, you'll need to go out and purchase an 'SD Card Reader' separately. I contacted support and searched the internet for a solution, but I never received a response from them, and none of the internet solutions worked. I tried turning on the unit first, then selecting USB / File Transfer, then plugging it into the computer, but it didn't work. Terrible.

This is a fantastic recorder
5/5

The built-in microphones have exceptional sensitivity. It is simple to use and performs admirably. The menu scrolling wheel works as expected, but every now and then I inadvertently hit the menu button while using the wheel, which isn't ideal and can be easily avoided. Fortunately, I don't use those functions all the time, so it's not a big deal. This product comes highly recommended from me.
