Can this unit be powered by a power adapter?

Any standard USB adapter will work, so you don't have to purchase one. You will need to pay attention as there is a Mini USB port on the power connector.

A USB port is all that I have on my piano (not a MIDI Would I be able to transfer information from the piano and convert it into midi data, which would then be sent to the iPhone? Do I have to play notes on my phone so that the app can hear them?

A USB to generic MIDI DIN converter is included with this device. The DIN connector and all the other internal components are standard. Please note that this device does not operate on MIDI devices with built-in USB hubs. To determine if your piano has an internal USB hub, you'll have to verify the availability of the USB port. There is no conversion with this module, the MIDI over USB connector is instead converted to MIDI over DIN.

It does what it is supposed to do

The purpose of my purchase was to allow me to connect my Keith McMillan Keyboard to some of my portable synths that have DIN Midi when I'm on the road. Century) is that it provides a USB host for the kboard (or whatever else you might need it for) and lets you connect it to a DIN Midi input. Plastic is used for the enclosure, but the enclosure is very sturdy. It might be beneficial to discuss the style of design There are some who might not like the gray plastic that looks like PC products from the 80s But I like the freedom it provides, and instead of having to stare at an adapter in my hotelroom, I make music.
