far as I understand, the hard beater is made of a composite material that is partly synthetic and partly Neither does it splinter nor break. As a cowbell, it will have the typical marks that hitting on it makes, but mine hasn't splintered yet, and I don't expect it to do so. The loud, bright sound that it makes is noticeable. Then tape or muffle the second one for a duller sound. You may want to buy two CDs and play one like it is and then tape or muffle the second one. This may be of some use to you. You won't face the same problems as you did with the wood beaters if you purchase it.
This is the most durable beater I have ever had for my cowbells from more than two years. If he continues to break them you might want to invest in a pair of goggles for him

It has been used at least twice a week for almost a year, It is normal to see this). As soon as my current one does not work anymore (probably a long time from now)
Edit From 6/12/2021 to The beater is still going strong, no need to replace it I suggest that you take this into consideration. I quite like the sound my bell makes when it is beatened with this beater. For smaller venues, I have been using one that is made of wood (LP268).
I think this beater will last much longer than a wooden beater since it seems to be extremely durable. A downside of this beater is that it doesn't sound as warm as a wooden one. You can play it over the edge of a cowbell, if you play it with its edge. On the other hand, when it is played with a tip on the flat of the cowbell, it produces A wooden beater for my cowbells was shredded by my wife, who IS NOT a percussionist and owns four of these.
I bought it because I was curious. It's made of a very hard fiber that should make it last at least for a long time. The bell is very heavy, so I had to put grip tape around the handle so it won't fly off my hand. It sounds a lot brighter than So far I've rated it 3 stars as I haven't made my mind up.
The cow bell has been my favorite instrument for the past ten years and I love working with this product.

There is a sharper sound coming out of the cowbell since it bings.
