The thought crosses my mind. As it was simply an upgrade to the felt slip that came with the Audio Technica, I chose to purchase this. We are not aiming to "eliminate static" because it would improve the I just didn't want to keep the slip mat from the factory. For the first few plays, I could actually hear the crackle of static whenever I removed a record and thought it was trash. However, in addition to standing in my carpeted office wearing socks, I also thought it was trash. Since the last time I felt static and heard it, I have not experienced it. What's the reason? What do you know? The quality of the sound is excellent. I love it! The tape was recorded before I replaced the felt mat, but I forgot to record the sound before I did that. So maybe I have a biased perception of the situation? The design is still pretty cool though. I didn't have to spend much money on it.
This thing is not only great to watch spin around, but a cork mat makes a distinct difference in the amount of noise it makes. I may be crazy, but I seem to be hearing much less ambient noise from my records than what I said to be the case. In spite of the fact that it sounds exactly the same as the stock platter, it looks so good that you should get it if your budget allows.

It's been about a year since I bought this slipmat, and I really enjoy It's a great looking design, as well as a great way to keep my records in order, level, and static-free.
