Small cork circles allowed the album to be raised off the mat, while the recessed version allowed the album to contact the mat fully. By detaching the album from the platter, it should be easier to identify the album. There are those who believe that the decoupled version will produce better bass and a bigger soundstage. As far as I can tell, there is no difference between the two versions.
My recommendation would be to go with what your cartridge indicates. You are just receiving a sound response from the mat itself. Due to the fact that I have five different cartridges, I track from one to five. The number 2 to 2 is correct. I usually use 2 grams of cartridge based on what cartridge I have.
When I purchased this product my technician suggested that I purchase a stabilizing agent. have no problems so far with the albums from the 1960s and 1970s that I own In the 1970s.
Vertical tracking angle (VTA) should be adjusted downward if that feature is available on your TT.

A mat like this was purchased for my old Ariston Q deck about ten years ago. As the platter was placed directly on the metal, the sound seemed a little crisper and deeper, but tended to favor the upper end of orchestral sound a little more. The audio was more honest when I put the rubber mat that came with the turntable under it. It also let the lower instruments back into the mix. As soon as I upgraded to Grado green, I switched to the original cartridge. As a result, the sound quality is exceptional, and Wharfedale bookshelf speakers make for an even better listening experience.
