The mute appears to be functional and looks as expected, but it is extremely light and has extremely narrow grooves for the strings to rest in. As a result, moving the mute quickly to the bridge is difficult, and performing with it is inconvenient.
Perhaps I had set too high a bar for myself. It has no effect on the sound of my viola. It did not appeal to me. Perhaps I had set too high a bar for myself.
Son, who plays the viola, requested a mute that did not vibrate when not in use, but could still be used on the instrument. He tried a few, but this one stood out as the clear winner.
I'm a professional violist, and this mute is fantastic! Slides on and off the bridge in a matter of seconds, mutes well, and doesn't rattle the strings. They were also ordered for our cellos.
