An exact replica of a reed can be found in the metal cradle. When you use this ligature with the cradle exposed, the cradle is just the right size so that it can sit comfortably In order to keep the edges from falling off one side or the other of the reed while tightening the thumbscrew, it takes a bit of positioning. The webbing on the exterior eliminates the need for any balancing act in order to secure the reed onto the cover. In my opinion, if the cradle was even one eighth inch wider (cradle exposed), it would be easier to place.
